Xu Lian
Music Educator
On a mission to pass on my love for music, I am passionate about helping my students discover the beauty of music, cultivate a deep love and appreciation for music. I firmly believe that music has the power to enrich our lives in countless ways, from foster creativity and self expression to promotion relaxation and reducing stress. I work focus on building student's self-esteem by bring out the best potential in every individual.
Graduated from The University of Wales with BA (Hons) in Music and Diploma in Music from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, with 20 years of teaching experience, with students are ranged from toddlers to adults. As a piano teacher, I am dedicated to creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment where my students can thrive. I strive to build a strong and trusting relationship with my students, to ride on their strength and improve their weakness, and mostly importantly, to help them to be able to express their feelings through music. I tailor my teaching approach to each individual students, taking into account their unique learning style, interests, and goals.
I like to expose my students with music from a wide range of genres and styles, providing a holistic music education by introducing different musical styles, exposing my students with works from different composers and musical genres from beginners level.
One of my core beliefs as a piano teacher is that true musical mastery requires more than just technical skill. While technique is certainly important, it is ultimately our passion and emotional connection to music that allows us to truly bring it to life. That's why I place a strong emphasis on helping my students cultivate a deep and abiding love for music, encouraging them to explore different genres, experiment with improvisation, and find their own unique voice as musicians.
I conduct annual/spontaneous performance opportunities which includes informal student gatherings, recitals and online concerts to provide my students with the opportunities to interact and build a strong community based on the love of music, also providing a platform to gain self-confidence and sense of achievement.

We all have heard of the benefits of learning an instrument - heightened intellectualI capabilities; sharpens concentration; improves emotional intelligence; improves memory skills; helps with stress relief etc.
Not only hoping to help my students to become successful musician, I particular wish to help them to become successful and confident individuals. I believe in intrinsic motivation, and my main teaching philosophy is to inspire my students, cultivate their interest, and make music an integral part of their life, and a love to last for a lifetime.
What I focus on:
Patience - a key skill to master especially in our current fast-pace lifestyle.
Perseverance - never give up or shy away from difficulties.
Discipline - take ownership in tasks and know the importance of time management
Imagination - what is music without feelings and imagination?
My Approch
NO TO EXAM ORIENTED LEARNING
EXAMS: PART OF THE PICTURE, BUT NOT THE WHOLE PICTURE
Music exams offer:

Motivation and inspiration, working from a carefully structured syllabus towards a definite goal

A measure of personal progress and attainment against internationally recognized benchmarks

An objective guide to improve your musical skills

Performance opportunities and a real sense of achievement
Personally I do no recommend focusing on taking exams ONLY, as that restrict the exposure, limitations on the choice of repertoires, and long period (often one year) of preparation has a high chance of killing the interests.
Non-exam-based leaning doesn't mean we take this journey lightly, I emphasis on building strong foundation and good playing techniques for all of my students, some examples are:

learn how to read the scores

know what the symbols and musical terms mean

understand the fingerings

understand the style of the piece

interpret what the composer's original intent for this piece is

understand the background of the piece

feel the musical sentences

appreciate the piece itself

relate the pieces to colours/stories/paintings/emotions/personal experiences
I choose a wide range of repertoires from different periods, styles, composers that is appropriate to each unique student, to provide a holistic understanding of music and drive significant improvements.
Students could decide to take exams and skip some grades along the way, for the purpose of gaining experience, and also use it as an estimate on their progress.
